Mark Zuckerberg showcases the Quest Pro headset for virtual and mixed reality, taking the Metaverse one step closer

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta Platforms, unveiled the company’s virtual and mixed reality headset on Tuesday, dubbed the Meta Quest Pro.

The Meta Quest Pro unveiled It came during the annual Meta Connect conference, and is described as “the first in a new line of advanced headphones designed for collaboration, creativity, and getting things done.”

The new headset is touted as a step up from the current $399 Oculus Quest 2 headset. Facebook acquired Oculus in 2014 and faced some backlash from Oculus loyalists when it began requiring new users to login to Facebook in October 2020. Meta had previously allowed users to activate the headset using a standalone Oculus login, and overturned a controversial 2020 change in July this year.

It will retail for £1,499 in the UK ($1,500 in the US) and is available for pre-order now, with shipping on October 25.

Essentially, the Meta Quest Pro Headset will provide consumers with a way to interact with virtual creations superimposed on a full-color view of the physical world around them. This is what the Meta collectively calls the “metaverse,” which includes augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR).

Meta has said it plans to spend $10 billion (£7 billion) a year over the next decade developing the metaverse, which it sees as the internet’s next step, making it more immersive.

Previous virtual reality headsets such as the Meta Oculus have immersed the user in a digital world, while augmented reality, already widely used in the form of games such as Pokémon Go, usually allows virtual objects to appear above the real world, for example using a smartphone screen or pair of glasses.

“The Meta Quest Pro is the first in a new line of advanced headphones designed to expand the possibilities of virtual and mixed reality,” Meta stated. “Its flat lenses bend light multiple times, reducing the headset’s bulk while still showing clearer images. The new curved battery on the back helps make the Meta Quest Pro a more balanced and overall comfortable headset.”

She said the high-resolution outward-facing cameras capture 4X as many pixels as the Meta Quest 2 and make the Meta Quest Pro the first full-color mixed reality device.

It’s also the first headset made by Meta to incorporate inward-facing sensors to capture natural facial expressions and eye tracking. Raise an eyebrow, smile, or simply make eye contact with someone, and your avatar will do the same.

Microsoft partnership

Meta says this helps improve social presence – the feeling of being with someone no matter where you are in the world.

In addition to offering Horizon’s social platforms and workspaces, Meta has also made virtual versions of Microsoft Office products like Word, Outlook and Teams available, after Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella joined forces with Mark Zuckerberg to announce.

Meta said the Quest Pro headset is intended to complement the entry-level Quest 2 headset rather than replace it.

While they’re significantly more expensive than the Quest 2 headphones, the $1,500 purchase price of the Quest Pro makes them significantly less than Microsoft’s Hololens 2, which costs $3,500.
