Trelleborg offers security sealing expertise at COMPAMED

Trelleborg Healthcare & Medical is showcasing its expertise in developing and manufacturing secure sealing solutions for customers in the medical industry at COMPAMED 2022.

Visitors to the stand will experience how Trelleborg can help customers meet the global demands and standards of the healthcare and medical industries through safe and durable solutions. From initial idea to deliverable product and beyond, Trelleborg partners with customers to guide them through the development process, providing support on material specifications including application-specific hoses, liquid silicone rubber (LSR) injection molding, and part production using multi-component processes.

Among the products featured at this year’s COMPAMED are multi-lumen LSR tubes for a variety of applications including pacemakers and urological implants. Trelleborg’s proprietary GeoTrans extrusion process allows for a greater variety of tube geometries to be created during extrusion, allowing for a range of customer-specific designs. GeoTrans also allows the silicone to change cross-section during extrusion to eliminate formwork and secondary bonding steps, providing a robust and hygienic design. These attributes reduce risk, the amount of work involved in assembly and downstream operations, and lower costs, while greatly improving the usability of medical products.

It is also distinguished by combination products, in which the medical device includes an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). Compound products are becoming increasingly important in medical treatment, as combination products are applied or implanted directly into the affected site and offer several advantages over oral administration, injection, or infusion. Benefits include the ability to provide highly accurate dosing and reduced side effects outside the affected site.

This process can be used to produce pain-relieving skin patches or anti-inflammatory implants to treat conditions including eye conditions. Trelleborg will present several examples of these implants and showcase our expertise in the complete development, manufacturing, and assembly process of drug delivery components, including a silicone matrix with one or more APIs.

Trelleborg Healthcare & Medical also offers some of the most complex micro-mold capabilities for hyperforming of LSR or plastics on top of another substrate, such as metal or electronic components. This technology can reduce the overall size of the assembled part and eliminate the need to fuse several small components together in a secondary process. Multicomponent molding can expand design options where no other technology can, giving medical device developers the opportunity to go beyond functionality. Because product profiles are virtually unlimited, designers of medical devices may not be aware of the potential.
