This is the iPhone you should buy for your mom

In response to a question from the audience at a Code conference event he attended a few weeks ago, Apple CEO Tim Cook said, “Buy your mom an iPhone.” The executive offered to respond to a reporter asking about Apple’s plans to adopt RCS on the iPhone, a text messaging system for communications richer than SMS that Google uses on Android. This is part of the famous blue-green text bubbles arguing that Google is still amusing in the US in its desperation to somehow persuade Apple to join in.

correspondent He said He and his mother find it difficult to send photos and videos to each other because they are using an Android device. This is where Cook came in.

While some people may not appreciate the response as new iPhones are more expensive than most Android phones, Cook’s advice is sound. You should buy your mom’s iPhone if Android gets in the way of your texting. The same goes for your father. But that doesn’t necessarily mean buying one of the four iPhone 14 models Apple just released, which start at $799.

Don’t just give your mom your old iPhone

The easiest option here might be to upgrade your current iPhone to iPhone 14. Instead of trading it or selling it online, you can erase the old model and pass it on to someone in your family. It could be a teen getting his first smartphone. It may also be a parent who would benefit from the promotion.

But don’t give them any old iPhone. If you are a heavy user, the health of your iPhone battery may be at risk. And that will affect your mom’s iPhone experience. You definitely don’t want your parents to hate iOS after jumping out of Android. At the very least, you can consider replacing the old battery with a completely new one.

If you are upgrading from a newer iPhone, such as the iPhone 12 onwards, your battery health should be fairly good. Also, the iPhone model supports 5G connectivity and should get several years of decent software upgrades. In such a case, you can consider replacing the battery.

Which new iPhone did your mom buy?

The best way is to get a brand new iPhone for your mom. It’s not only a brand new device that will last several years without worrying about battery health and any issues, but it’s also a nice gesture. Parents get a brand new device, complete with the entire unlocking and setup experience.

You’ll still need your mom’s help setting up the phone for the first time, especially if it’s a switch from Android. But she should be ready to go in no time, and adapting to iOS should be reasonably easy.

However, your mom may not need the latest and greatest iPhone. Fortunately, Apple’s iPhone 2022 lineup is simply incredible, with prices ranging from $429 for the 64GB iPhone SE 3 to $1,599 for the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Somewhere out there lies the must-have iPhone for your mom.

Measurement matters

When buying a smartphone for a parent, size is very important. And I’m referring to two things here: diagonal screen and storage.

Screen size is the most important detail. You’ll want to steer clear of the 4.7-inch iPhone SE. It’s too small for their eyes. They may need to set up huge fonts and use zoom in so they can comfortably read the content on the screen. But still, the iPhone SE is very small. That’s why you should only consider the full screen iPhones for mom and dad.

Even the 5.4-inch iPhone 13 mini with 128GB of storage might be too small for them. You should focus on your 6.1 inch or 6.7 inch iPhone. Some may prefer the larger screen, while others prefer the smaller screen.

One thing to note here is that Apple only sells two 6.7-inch iPhones at the moment. The iPhone 14 Plus starts at $899, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max starts at $1,199. You won’t find Pro Max models older than Apple, so you’ll have to look at the carrier’s inventory and electronics stores. Once again, we’re targeting a new iPhone here for mom.

Second, you need adequate storage space. You should ignore the 64GB category unless your mom is comfortable using your iCloud account or setting up her own. Use at least 128 GB of memory. You’ll need storage space for photos and videos, which tend to bundle chat apps like iMessage. After all, this is the reason for the upgrade.

And my mom might want to keep her new iPhone for a few years.

Apple may not sell the best iPhone to your mom

If you’re on a tight budget, Apple isn’t selling the best new iPhone to your mom. This is the 6.1-inch 2019 iPhone 11 that Apple just discontinued. It’s the kind of iPhone that satisfies all your needs.

First of all, it’s a relatively new iPhone that will be running a lot of iOS versions for the next several years. It features a large 6.1 inch screen, and will get decent battery life. Finally, it comes in a 128GB version.

Prior to the launch of the iPhone 14, Apple sold the iPhone 11 with a starting price of $499. That’s only $70 more than the iPhone SE 3. You’ll now get better prices, but not from Apple. You will likely be able to score the phone at a great price from other retailers. But you’ll want to buy a brand new device so your mom can get the most out of her switch to iPhone.

Apple's 2022 lineup includes iPhone SE, iPhone 12, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

If money is no object, you can easily upgrade it to an iPhone 12, 13, or 14. You’ll get a brighter OLED panel, much better cameras, faster performance, 5G connectivity, and a device that lasts longer than the iPhone 11.
