Among the university’s five colleges, none are growing at a faster pace than the College of Computing. “The demand for computing talent in the tech industry has never been stronger,” said Dennis Livesay, dean of the School of Computing. Programs with increased enrollment this year include geoengineering, geospatial engineering, and mechanical engineering technology. Associate Dean and Graduate School Dean Will Cantrell says that oActual enrollment in graduate schools is up more than 10% from last year. With over 100 programs offered, the Graduate School has seen an increase in interest from students across its geographic range, including Michigan residents, non-residents, and international students. Cantrell was particularly encouraged by the surge of interest this year from students from countries in Central and West Africa, particularly Ghana and Nigeria.

“Students come to Michigan Tech, to Houghton, from all over the world,” Cantrell said. “And a lot of them overcome great hurdles to get here because they understand the value of a Michigan Tech graduate degree. I know it sounds like a vulgarity, but it’s the truth. When we show our programs to potential students, we get a very easy job, because they know that a Michigan graduate degree is a very easy job. Tech means a lot.”

While many graduate programs have seen an increase in enrollment, None of them saw a percentage increase year on year Manal health informatics a program. “Our program has recently seen an increase in the number of students—many of them international students—who have received clinical training and work experience as doctors, dentists, pharmacists, nurses, or physical therapists,” Hemprov said. “They come to Michigan Tech in search of health informatics expertise that will improve clinical decision-making and outcomes for their patients.”

As health-related science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields on campus attract more students than ever before, Michigan Tech is poised to meet the demand. In April, the university launched the foundation stone for the new H-STEM Health Technologies and Engineering Complex, or H-STEM complex. Scheduled for completion in the fall of 2024, the H-STEM complex will be the focus Health related research and on-campus education, where multidisciplinary teams will collaborate in flexible, shared lab spaces at work to improve human health and quality of life.
