The latest iPhone 14 features have been on Android for years

This story is part of Hotspot iPhone 2022CNET’s collection of news, tips, and advice on Apple’s most popular products.

with the iPhone 14 Now on sale, people can try out some of the “hacks” that Apple promoted during event detection. But for those using Android, some of these upgrades are very familiar.

Put it in the “reality distortion field” that many promote. It’s also a reminder not to take every claim at face value. While iPhone 14 تقييمات reviews and the iPhone 14 Pro Powerful, it’s best to consider any upcoming big purchase decision – the Pro starts at $999 – with the right context.

Here is a breakdown of all the features coming to iPhone 14 that were first on Android.

Android did it before iPhone 14: Pixel binning

The iPhone 14 Pro has three main cameras: wide angle at 1x zoom, ultra wide angle at 0.5x, and 3x zoom. The use of the central pixel of the 48MP sensor in the main camera means there is actually a fourth camera at 2x zoom.

The iPhone 14 Pro will be the first iPhone to get a 48MP camera. The number of pixels is four times larger than the standard iPhone 14 and last year’s iPhone 13 Pro. But with so many more pixels packed into a small smartphone camera sensor, it’s hard for each pixel to get enough light to produce a beautiful image.

To counter that, phones like the Samsung Galaxy S21, OnePlus 9, and Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra, as well as budget Android phones, will bundle groups of pixels together to make them act as one big pixel. This solution, called pixel binning, allows sensors to process incoming light while also maintaining high resolution.

During Apple’s “Far Out” presentation, product manager Vitor Silva was careful to say that Apple was introducing “a whole new class of cameras to the iPhone” and not that the company was the first to ever use the technology.

Shaky video has always been a problem in shooting video on smartphones. While phone makers have improved at reducing shake in videos over the years, it’s not quite as far as the GoPro-style action camera. Thanks to advances in stabilization and post-processing methods, phones like the 2020 Google Pixel 5 and Samsung Galaxy S20 have Active Stabilization and Super Steady modes that have helped people capture GoPro-like video in motion.

All iPhone 14 models will get Apple’s new Motion Mode, which should make for fun shots when shooting on the run. It’s as if the mode will punch out the image for a tighter crop, as is common with other stabilization methods. Either way, Apple has fallen behind on this.

Android did it before iPhone 14: Always Show

Some versions of always-on display technology have been on Android for years. The feature was standard on the defunct Lumia Windows Phone line when it was introduced in 2013. LG pioneered this feature in its smartwatches even before Samsung. The Always On feature allows essential information, such as the time or calendar events, to be always visible, without the need to tap or touch the device.

Greg “Joz” Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of marketing, said the iPhone 14 Pro’s Super Retina XDR display’s LTPO technology allows the display to operate at a slower 1 Hz refresh rate and consume less power, although she’s not the first to do so. That honor goes to the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra earlier this year, which features the same display technology.

The hallmark of the past few generations of iPhones has been the large notch located at the top of the screen. With the iPhone 14 Pro, Apple is following Android in over-the-top for a pill form instead.

When Apple introduced the notch with the iPhone X in 2017, Samsung was quick to do so Harnesses Strange design decision. Quickly, Android makers were looking for ways to reduce their selfie camera notches by making much smaller notches in the screen or opting for perforated cutouts instead. The OnePlus 7 Pro has gone so far as to add a mechanism that allows the selfie camera to pop out of the frame, making the screen completely unobstructed. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 opts for a selfie camera under the display, making the interior screen virtually unobstructed.

Either way, Apple is years behind in moving away from the top notch. The new pill-shaped opening is also noticeably wide. At least, with the addition of Dynamic Island, a software feature that better integrates aperture into the phone’s user interface with unique animations, it makes the black dock more palatable.

Apple deserves some credit

Apple didn’t show it all with iPhone 14 Previous Android Ideas. The A16 Bionic chip on the iPhone 14 Pro is a mobile processor beast and will likely remain king of the smartphone world, unless Google fixes it with the Pixel 7 later this year. The Super Retina XDR display delivers a peak brightness of 2,000 nits, surpassing the Galaxy S22 Ultra in 1750 net. Satellite SOS Emergency Service is something that’s meant for satellite phones, but it gives iPhone 14 users a way to call for help in the event of any dangerous situation in the distant US or Canada. And the front TrueDepth camera will give a more natural bokeh effect.

All that said, when a tech company flaunts their wares, it’s always good to have a certain degree of skepticism.
