It is always a good idea to have a spare portable battery source for your portable devices. Most iPhones and iPads have decent battery life (some are excellent), but when you rush out the door, your device isn’t always fully charged and that can quickly add hours of heavy use. Electrical outlets are not always available, even if you bring a charger with you. Unless you’re able to rely on wireless charging, you also need to remember charging cables, or the battery pack is more frustrating than helpful. Last Movie Powerstation Plus It aims to be the perfect portable power solution for Apple iPhone and iPad owners. Compact and lightweight, it combines a 10,000mAh battery capacity with a 20W USB-C port, plus built-in Lightning and USB-C cables.
My daughter is the poster child for someone who needs this solution. She currently goes to college on the other side of town, and flies from here to catch the bus in the morning — often with her iPhone battery already half drained from watching videos while eating breakfast and getting ready. Sometimes you’re on campus until the evening, and the iPhone is critical to safety, staying social, spending time between classes, entertaining while on the bus, and everything else kids do with a mobile phone.
If her iPhone battery dies, it’s pretty much a disaster.
I gave her a built in battery pack to keep in her backpack to make sure she always had an emergency power supply if needed. I’ve also included an official Apple Lightning cable – an item that looks like a gold coin here. Despite pleas to leave this cable in her backpack, it often finds its way out, after which she is stuck with a battery but no way to charge her iPhone.
This is where Mophie Powerstation Plus comes in.
Few people would pull a spare battery for their iPhone if it was built like a boat anchor. Fortunately, Powerstation Plus is very compact. It measures approximately 5.75 x 2.75 inches, and is only half an inch thick. It is also surprisingly light. According to my kitchen scale, it’s just over 8 ounces. This size makes it easy to put this thing in a backpack, purse, or even a coat pocket and forget about it until you need it.
Charging Options iPhone and iPad Owners Need
Tucked securely into the grooves running along the sides of the Powerstation Plus is a pair of built-in cables. Made of flexible material, each is approximately 5 inches long when pulled. One ends with a USB-C connector, and the other is Lightning. Both put 20W. The USB-C option is essential for modern iPads and also means you can help charge most Android smartphones (and many wireless headphones). In addition to the built-in cables, there is a USB-C PD port that is used to charge the battery, but it can also be used to produce 20W of power. This is where you can take out the Micro USB if needed. You will need to bring your own cable if you want to use this port.
You can charge up to three devices simultaneously, but the combined total output is limited to 27W.
The ability to charge the iPhone multiple times
The total capacity of the Powerstation Plus battery is 10,000 mAh. This makes them ideal for travel, including use on an airplane. The 100,000mAh battery pack can fully charge my daughter’s iPhone XS Max about three times, and it works much faster than the in-box charger from Apple.
I used it to charge my iPad Air from 50% to 100% using the built-in USB-C cable. It took just over an hour to do this. Next, the Powerstation Plus LEDs showed three out of four, or somewhere near 75% of remaining capacity. These LEDs aren’t exact – in fact, 50% of the iPad’s 7,600mAh battery should leave the Powerstation Plus with a capacity of about two-thirds – but you do need to do some approximation with just four LEDs. However, it is close enough to give you a good idea of when you should recharge the battery pack.
Priced at $79.95 Movie Powerstation Plus It is an easy recommendation for iPhone and iPad owners. It’s cheap insurance against running out of power and eliminates the hassle of remembering to bring charging cables.
Just don’t forget to keep the Powerstation Plus itself charged – as far as I know, no one has figured out a solution for that yet.
