Microsoft engineering teams have been working on the Surface Duo branded foldable smartphone and have updated the device to Surface Duo 2 in 2021 as shown below. One of the key aspects of the design is of course the foldable hinge. Now Microsoft’s mechanical hinge team has invented the foldable PC mouse which was published by the US Patent Office on Thursday, November 17, 2022. They have been working on this since April 2020.

In their patent background, Microsoft states that a computer mouse is a commonly used input device for a variety of computer systems. Mobile computers, like netbooks and computing tablets, are becoming increasingly popular. However, traditional computer mouse designs are often too bulky or inconvenient to carry around with a laptop computer, and compact computer mouse designs often lack ergonomic design and may be incompatible to use. There are important areas for new and certified computer mouse designs that are portable and ergonomic.
A Microsoft patent covers a foldable computer mouse that solves the technical problem described above by being portable and ergonomic. The Instant Application Computer Mouse provides a technical solution to this problem by including a deformable body that is configured to be shaped in a first folded configuration in which the computer mouse is in a compact, portable size and in a second expanded configuration in which the computer mouse is expanded into an ergonomic shape that can be used to receive user input to control the mouse. PC.
A computer mouse may provide many technical benefits. Mouse foldable form factor It may allow the mouse to be folded around at least part of a laptop computer case or housing with which the mouse will be used on, but not limited to, a tablet or a laptop as stated in the FIG patent. 1b below.
Attaching a mouse to the computing device case reduces the possibility of a computer mouse being lost while traveling with the computing device.
Furthermore, a computer mouse may also receive power from the computing device while the mouse is attached to the computing device’s case or housing. This allows the computer mouse to be charged and ready to use.
Microsoft FIG patent. 1A below shows an example of a folding mouse with FIG. 1C shows two touch-sensitive areas #105a and #105b directed toward the nose of mouse #100. The touch-sensitive areas may include a capacitive sensor, force sensor, or other type of sensor configured to detect tactile input.
Microsoft FIG patent. Figure 4A above shows another example display of the deformable body of a collapsible mouse which shows the upper side of the deformable body and in which the deformable body is in the expanded configuration; Figs. Figure 4B shows another example of the deformable body view showing the upper side of the deformable body and in which the deformable body is in the folded configuration.
Microsoft FIG patent. Figure 8 above shows a foldable mouse with a cover over the deformable body and the stretchable cover of a foldable mouse.
