To edit videos on Android, you can use native apps like Samsung Gallery app or Google Photos. These apps have basic video editing features like trimming, cropping, adjusting settings like brightness and contrast, adding text, video filters, and music. For more feature-packed Android video editors, you will need premium apps like Kinemaster and FilmoraGo.

Editing apps

While it is possible to create all kinds of videos on your phone, you should edit almost anything complex with multiple video, audio, and graphics paths on your PC. But the video editing apps on your phone are more than enough for creating YouTube and social media videos.

There are plenty of excellent video editing apps out there, with options ranging from basic editors to those that rival computer video editing software. Kinemaster

Kinemaster is one of the best video editing apps that you can get for Android. The free version is packed with features such as the premium option as far as video editing goes. But you’ll want to splurge on a monthly or yearly subscription to remove in-app ads, watermark, and access to premium templates and assets.

You can access hundreds of video templates that can be quickly edited or “mixed”. You’ll find templates for Instagram, TikTok, YouTube intros and outros, and more, so you don’t have to worry about creating them from scratch. Switch to a file Create tab to create and edit videos on your phone. The app will access your phone gallery and show you all the photos and videos to make a video. If you are linking multiple videos together, you may want to set up a folder in your phone gallery for easy access.

Kinemaster also allows you to preset the aspect ratio of the video, so you don’t have to worry about unnecessary cropping when publishing your video to different platforms. You can set the aspect ratio of YouTube videos, TikTok, YouTube shorts, Instagram and more. You can also preset the default duration for images and transitions.

The app lets you split, trim, speed up, move, zoom, rotate, mirror, and add video, text and graphics filters easily. Kinemaster also has many audio features, including an audio mixer, special effects, and the ability to record audios. Forgot to record something you need? You can do this directly in the app itself.

Features of native apps that let you edit videos on Android

You’ll need a premium video editor for more detailed editing, but your phone’s gallery app or Google Photos is more than up to the task if you want to edit individual video files. With Google Photos Video Editor, you can trim and crop videos, adjust brightness, contrast, and highlights. You can add filters from a range of basic options and mark up videos with text or use the stylus or highlighters.

You may see more options depending on the phone you’re using. The OnePlus Gallery app (on a OnePlus phone running Android 12) does more than Google Photo Editor. You can trim and crop videos, add video and text filters. But you can also layer in an audio clip, video effects, watermark, and speed up or slow down the video. Samsung Video Editor adds the ability to add face effects and stickers to a video, apart from anything other native apps can do.

I will use Google Photos for the guides below and refer to Samsung Gallery and OnePlus Gallery apps if they offer different features. This is to show all possible video editing operations with free apps. For more complex tasks, you will have to use premium apps like Kinemaster and FilmoraGo.

Trim and cut video clips

Open the video you want to edit and tap release at the bottom of the screen. This step works to open the editor with Google Photos and OnePlus Gallery. In the Samsung Gallery app, tap the pencil icon to launch the video editor.

To trim videos, go to video tab or scissors icon and use the sliders at the beginning and end of the video to cut it. OnePlus Gallery and Samsung Gallery make it easy to trim videos, as you can see the timestamp of the start and end points. Google Images is less accurate, as you will have to rely on visual references to cut videos.

Switch to a file A & Crop Tab to crop your video. Aspect ratio cropping is set to “Free” by default. Use the four-dot rectangle on the video screen to adjust the size to whatever you want. You can also set the aspect ratio to specific options like 1:1, 4:3, 3:2, and more. Use the dial to rotate the video by a certain angle or tap the rotate button to rotate it by 90 degrees.

Google Photos has the option to crop a video with odd non-rectangular shapes as well. Tap the icon next to the rotate button and use the points to set the cropping area. The Samsung Gallery app has a button to invert the video and the ability to crop and rotate the video along a horizontal or vertical axis instead of flipping the entire image (as you’ll lose the content).

How to paste videos together

Once the videos have been cut and cropped, it’s time to stitch them together. go to the Library tab, tap services, and choose Movie. Google Photos will use its own AI intelligence to create predefined movies using your photos and videos. Or you can start from scratch by pressing a new movie. You will see a list of all your photos and videos, and you can use the search button to find specific clips.

You can trim added videos, switch between portrait and landscape mode, and add more photos and videos to your movie. Tap and hold a clip and drag it up and down to rearrange your timeline. You can add a music track from your Music folder or choose one of the available themes. However, you do not have any control over the audio track. You will find your movie by going to seek Tab and scroll down to Saved creations.

Add text and graphics to videos

Native apps are not the best choice for adding text and graphics to videos beyond basic features. Google Photos allows you to mark up your videos with text, a stylus, or a highlighter. But it appears for the entire video and does not include animation. It is not the best tool if you are looking to add text editing to your videos on Android.

Samsung Gallery app has better features in this regard. You can mark up a video with the pen or text tool and set how long the text appears. It also automatically includes an animation that looks great.

For more complex text and graphics, you’ll need an app like Kinemaster. tap on Layers and choose text or Handwriting. Write the text and put it on the timeline. You can easily set the duration and location of the text in the video. You also have plenty of options for indoor, outdoor, and overall cinematic animations.

How to add music to videos on Android

Unlike the OnePlus Gallery app, Google Photos and Samsung Gallery app don’t have a way to add music to videos directly. In the case of the former, press Audio recording In the video editor, select a track from the Music folder or the available options, and add it to the video. With Google Photos and Samsung Gallery, you will have to create a movie using the above steps. Tap the music note icon to add a background music layer. However, you cannot adjust the sound using native applications.

You’ll need to turn to premium apps for anything other than background music. Kinemaster lets you layer multiple audio tracks and record audio clips using the app. tap on My voice To add music and special effects, tap the microphone icon to record a voiceover.

How to use video filters

Filters are a great way to edit your Android videos and make them look good in one click. Native apps and Google Photos have plenty of video filters to choose from. go to the filters tab and select one of the many options. You will see a preview of how the filter works. The app will apply the filter to the entire video. If you want to change things up, you’ll first have to trim the videos, apply filters to the separate parts, and link them together. But if you are doing any complex video editing on your phone, I recommend purchasing a premium app subscription.
