Google Play November updates: New Android photo picker

Google has begun previewing the latest changes to Android as part of its November Google Play system updates, including improvements to Wallet and Parental Controls.

Modernization: Google is bringing an updated photo picker to approx All Android device, including completely old ones.

While major updates to Android usually arrive on a yearly basis — give or take the occasional mid-year release like Android 12L — Google is constantly improving the experience for phones, tablets, wearables, and more. These improvements come from a suite of apps/services that the company calls the “Google System”, namely the Play Store, Google Play Services, and monthly Android OS updates.

The easiest way to check if you need to update Google Play Services on your phone is to follow a direct link to the app Play Store List And update from there, if available. To update the Play Store, tap on your avatar in the corner, then on Settings. Under the About section, you will see the option to Update Play Store. Meanwhile, Google Play system updates can be found through the Settings app, under About phone > Android version > Google Play system update.

Google has started sharing what to expect from its November batch of changes — though details of the official Play System update haven’t been released yet — starting with a tweak to Android’s parental controls. Previously, no supervised user (or child accounts) on an Android device would be able to change the device’s clock, preventing an easy way to bypass time restrictions. With the latest Play Services update, the clock change restriction is only active for those who have a certain time limit, otherwise it allows clock change freely.

Moreover, Google is making some modifications to Google Wallet, allowing those who accept the payment service to customize the Wallet logo. In addition, app/web developers will have new ways to “deep link” into parts of Google Wallet.

Update 3/11: Google has now announced that its revamped Android photo-picker UI is a UI Debuted with Android 13 – It is made available for almost every Android device. According to the patch notes, phones and tablets going back to Android 4.4 KitKat, released in 2013, will be able to use the photo picker in Android 13.

Originally, only Google had it He said Devices running Android 11 and above will get the new design. It appears the company has now found a way to bundle it with Play Services version 22.43, making it part of Google’s November system updates.

Update 11/10: According to the latest set of release notes, version 22.45 of Google Play Services includes a “significant” fix related to account management on Android phones. While this update is usually installed automatically, you can manually check for updates via a file Play Store List.

Speaking of the Play Store, it looks like Google has prepared some “new layouts” for Play Store search results.

Meanwhile, Google Wallet is undergoing further tweaks and improvements this month, including an expansion to “all FeliCa-enabled devices in Japan.” There will also be some improvements to the way the app handles SMART Health Cards.

Update 11/17: Building on the “critical” fixes introduced earlier in the month, Google shared that more is on the cards for “System Management & Diagnostics”. Google Wallet is also set to get some “major improvements” for using your Android phone as a digital car key, as is available on phones like the Pixel 7 Pro and Galaxy S22 Ultra.

Meanwhile, the Google Play Store is gaining a new feature that aims to fix the occasional issue of an app update causing an unexpected crash. While developers often aim to ensure that their apps work on as many devices as possible, sometimes these types of issues can still occur. It is not yet clear how it will work, but the Play Store should help you get a working copy of the app.

Other Play Store additions include kids menu tweaks for tablets, Game Collection changes on ChromeOS, and the option to automatically update apps over mobile data if you don’t have Wi-Fi access.
