Donald Trump’s Truth Social is now allowed on the Google Play Store

Google said on Wednesday it had allowed Donald Trump’s Truth Social app on the Google Play Store for Android devices — after receiving assurances that the app would meet the platform’s standards for moderating harmful content.

The app — which Trump launched after he was denied access to Twitter during the 2021 Capitol riots — has been removed from the Google Play store due to its lack of moderation tools, including violent threats.

Google said that Truth Social has since been updated to comply with its policies banning objectionable posts, and has built in effective systems for flagging and removing spam as well as blocking abusers.

“Apps may be distributed on Google Play provided they comply with our developer guidelines, including requirements for effective moderation of user-generated content and the removal of objectionable posts such as those that incite violence,” a Google spokesperson said in response to an AFP query.

Developers can make Android apps available anywhere else on the Internet, but the Play Store is the main source of content for users.

The Truth Social app for Android is available on the social networking site and other places that may not have Google’s content management rules, according to the Alphabet-owned tech giant.

“It’s been a pleasure working with Google, and we’re thrilled that they have helped us finally bring Truth Social to all Americans, no matter what device they’re using,” the CEO of Trump Media and Technology Group (TMTG) said in a statement. .

TMTG announced earlier this month today that the Truth Social app was newly available to people in the US who use Samsung smartphones, which are powered by dedicated Android software and have their own app store.

Samsung’s share of the US smartphone market is about 30 percent, according to industry analysis firm Counterpoint.

A version of Truth Social designed for Apple mobile devices is available on the App Store, which also enforces rules about moderating content.

Google said in August that it notified Truth Social that its app violated Play policies and demanded “effective systems for moderating user-generated content” for it to be displayed on the platform.

The online giant said at the time that Trump’s app violated rules banning content that incites physical threats and violence, but was working to address those issues.

The Truth Social was billed as Trump’s response to Twitter — from which he was fired in January 2021, days after a mob of supporters dismissed his electoral defeat to Joe Biden for storming the US Capitol.

Billionaire Elon Musk, who struck a $44 billion deal to buy Twitter, said he would likely allow the former US leader to return to the platform. After trying to get away, Musk now says the faltering deal is back in business and may close by the end of this month.

Meanwhile, the merger between TMTG and a blank check company called Digital World Acquisition Corp – which aims to bring in new funding for Trump’s platform – has yet to take place. Digital World shares are up more than seven percent to just over $17 in after-market trading in the wake of the Play Store news.

After being excluded from major social networks, Trump has only recovered a fraction of his followers on the Truth Social.

Trump has 4.18 followers on the Truth Social, compared to the 88.8 million he had on Twitter and 35.4 million he had on Facebook before he was taken down for encouraging real-world violence like the deadly attack on the US Capitol.

The Truth Social has become an online haven for QAnon fans to share conspiracy theories such as prominent members of the Democratic Party involved with Satanists or pedophiles. Disinformation watchdog NewsGuard reported finding dozens of Truth Social accounts sharing QAnon content, with Trump among those resharing posts.
