Create a Shortcut to Google Password Manager on your Android phone for faster access to all your credentials «Android:: Gadget Hacks

Everyone should know that setting complex passwords for sensitive digital accounts is the best practice Protect yourself from hacking. Those who adhere to password creation best practices also know that keeping up with each account’s passwords is nearly impossible, even when using passphrases. That is why it is highly recommended to use a password manager.

Password managers can also help store sensitive account information, generate random strings of characters for passwords, and autofill passwords when logging into apps and sites. But often these services lock their best features behind a subscription or in-app purchase model.

Google’s Password Manager is a powerful, convenient, and free option. It was initially available through the Chrome browser and operating system, and is now tightly integrated into Android. The downside was that the access wasn’t as convenient as the third-party apps, but the recent Google Play Services update changed that.

Step 1: Update Google Play Services

Since the new feature is coming via Google Play Services, you’ll need to make sure you’re up to date. On any Android phone model, open the Google Play Store, tap your profile icon at the top right of the homepage, and select “Settings.” Then choose the About section to expand it.

You’ll immediately see which version of Play Store you’re currently running, and as long as you’re using version 22.18 or higher (released June 2022) you should be good to go. However, updating to the latest version is always good for things to run as smoothly as possible.

Click the “Play Store Update” hyperlink under the current Play Store version, and it will tell you if you have an update. Either way, click OK to continue.

Alternative method: Google Play system update

You don’t need to update Google Play Services from the Google Play Store app. Alternatively, you can do it from the Settings app of your Android phone.

On your Pixel device, head to the Security menu and tap Google Play System Update. This option includes updates from Google to Android, Google Play Store, and Google Play Services. If there is an update available, click Restart Now.

The process is similar to other Android devices. For example, open Settings on your Samsung Galaxy model, tap “Biometrics and Security,” then “Google Play System Update.” If there is an update, click “Download and install”, then “Restart now” when it is completely downloaded.

Step 2: Open your Google Password Manager

If you have a Pixel phone, open the Settings app and go to Passwords & Accounts and tap on it. At the top, under the Passwords category, click on “Google” and then select the appropriate account if you have more than one registered.

On a Samsung Galaxy model, open the Settings app, go to and select General Management, then tap Passwords and Autofill. Select “Google” under “Passwords,” then choose the appropriate account if you have more than one.

Alternatively, on a Pixel, Galaxy, or other Android device, you can search for “Password Manager” from the Settings search bar to go directly to the account picker or Password Manager screen.

Step 3: Access the password manager settings

You are now in the password manager. As you can see, it’s not as easy to get here as it is for other password manager apps, so let’s solve that for future use. Click the gear icon under your profile picture to access settings, then find and tap the “Add a shortcut to your home screen” option towards the bottom of the screen.

Step 4: Add the Password Manager shortcut

In the shortcut dialog, you have two options: you can long press the widget icon to place it manually on your home screen or in a folder, or you can tap the Add to Home screen button or the Add button to automatically include it in the first available place on your home screen . Either way, you’ll have one-click access to your passwords from now on.
