Apple iPhone 14 review, compared to iPhone 13 mini

A little backstory. I have been an iPhone user for over a decade now, but recently, I developed an affinity with the iPhone mini and iPhone SE. Those who follow my writing know how much I love compact phones. So the decision to use the new iPhone 14 was not easy. Despite initially resisting change, I decided to take a leap of faith and agreed to review the iPhone 14. I spent the past week with the iPhone 14 as my primary phone, and I’m here to share the wonderful and frustrating experience of switching from a compact phone to a larger device.

Editing on your iPhone takes more time

For the first three days, I was like, “Bring me back for the iPhone 13 mini”. Only on the fourth day I started getting used to the 6.1 inch screen in the iPhone 14. Yes, it would be a big change if you are coming from older iPhones like the iPhone 8. I usually find it difficult to adapt to a new one. The environment and in this case, I’ve been giving up something I love, the compact form factor.

The iPhone 14 makes the iPhone 13 look small. Different form factors and screen sizes change the phone experience. Reaching the top of the screen with one hand on the iPhone 14 is nearly impossible for me in sharp contrast to the mini. The iPhone 13 mini is also a light phone and I can scroll through or check emails without feeling the fatigue of holding the device for a long time. The iPhone 13 mini also fits better with skinny jeans with small pockets.

It’s interesting that the two phones are the same when you look at the specs, but the size makes a huge difference when it comes to usability.

I can do a lot on iPhone 14

The additional display space provides a lot of benefits that a daily user would appreciate. First, I am able to edit copies on the go which is frustrating on my iPhone 13 mini due to its small 5.4 inch screen. Secondly, the iPhone 14’s 6.1-inch screen is useful for mobile games as the controls will be easy to reach with your fingers.

In books, it’s two or three extra paragraphs which means less page flipping. Typing on the keyboard on the iPhone 14 is noticeably better and those larger keys are very useful. The access to the buttons on the bottom corner of the iPhone 14 is also better compared to the iPhone 13 mini.

Although these are slight differences, they provide a more enjoyable experience. I’ll find the iPhone 14 handy, especially if I’m going to take notes or write stories on Google Docs.

Display is larger, but no change in visual quality

The iPhone 14 screen may be larger, but that doesn’t mean the screen is brighter, text is clearer, colors are clearer, and photos have more definition. Coming from the iPhone 13 mini, which also uses a vibrant OLED display like the one in the iPhone 14 but only smaller, I don’t see any difference in the viewing experience. Apple kept a 60Hz refresh rate on the iPhone 14, like the iPhone 13 or iPhone 12. I’m not disappointed that Apple didn’t put a 120Hz refresh rate on the iPhone 14 display.

The always-on display is also not present on the iPhone 14, and is currently reserved for the high-end iPhone 14 Pro. The notch at the top of the screen is still part of the design, just like the iPhone 13.

I love the design and the back of the glass is easy to fix

iPhone 14 feels great in your hands and the design looks premium and expensive. From a usability point of view, the flat edges make the iPhone 14 easier to grip. I had the blue iPhone 14 to review and it looks amazing. Its shape and size are roughly the same as last year’s iPhone. Apple continues to use its durable ceramic armor on the front, aluminum frame, and water resistance.
Interestingly, repairing iPhone 14 is much easier compared to other modern models. Old iPhones required removing the screen even if the back glass was the only broken component. With iPhone 14, the back panel can be removed individually for a less expensive repair. It is a win for reform.

Performance is solid, but no real improvement

iPhone 14 has the leading performance one would expect from an iPhone. Unsurprisingly, there are no performance gains on my iPhone 13 as this has the same A15 Bionic chip as last year’s models. The difference is that the iPhone 14 has a version with additional GPU cores (the same is found in the iPhone 13 Pro Max). As a flagship phone in its own right, everyday tasks like browsing, video streaming, and even gaming are easy to handle. So far, I have not experienced any lag while using it for various tasks.
Apple’s latest version of iOS 16 comes preloaded with iPhone 14 purchase. There are many new features in iOS, including the ability to customize the lock screen with widgets, but one feature that I think comes in handy in my life is keeping track of medications on a device. my iPhone. It will motivate you to take your tablets when the time is right.

Cameras are a little better

The iPhone 14 still has a dual-lens camera system – main and ultra-wide – and both have a 12-megapixel sensor. Again, on the surface, it might look like the iPhone 13; The 14 main camera actually has a larger sensor and a new lens with a faster f1.5 aperture. Pictures in good lighting are detailed, sharp, and balanced. Low-light performance is greatly improved, and you can clearly see the difference in the camera shots (below).

Even in the dark, there are a lot of details.
The iPhone 14 camera captures more vivid shots.
It’s great for photos too.
The landscape shots turned out to be better than I expected.
Sleeping Beauty.
There is a lot of depth to this picture.
The iPhone 14 camera does not overexpose, and the colors look beautiful.
Pictures taken with the main camera are really excellent.

The hardware combined with Apple’s new “Optical Engine” does a great job of improving image quality, especially when taking photos in low light. In my testing, I got the results in line with what Apple promised. I was also surprised to see higher quality shots while zooming in. Check out the picture below for a cat. Just notice how the iPhone picks up the texture and detail in the cat’s hair.

The digital zoom on the iPhone 14 is slightly improved.

Apple also offers an Action Mode for videos that provides gimbal-like stabilization. It’s a software-based solution that lets you capture videos even if your hand is shaking. It’s not as efficient as Apple claims but it’s a fun feature nonetheless on the iPhone.

The iPhone 14 camera shoots amazing videos, which are consistently ranked high among smartphones. The selfie camera with autofocus provides better results in terms of detail and color reliability.

The longer battery life caught my attention

The biggest change I felt after using the iPhone 14 was how much longer battery life was lost on the iPhone 13 mini. Apple doesn’t share the exact size of the battery, but in our battery test, it lasted approximately 15 hours. This means that the phone can work almost from the first morning until the next morning. The battery life on the iPhone 14 is impressive. It also supports fast charging and Qi wireless charging. If you’re switching from an iPhone XR or iPhone 12 mini, it might be best to consider the larger iPhone 14 to have a larger battery.

Should I recommend the iPhone 14?

As a junior iPhone 13 user, I don’t see a real reason to upgrade to iPhone 14 until people like me change their minds and want a phone with a bigger screen. Even if you are an iPhone 12 or 13 user, you won’t see much difference since there aren’t many changes. I think a lot of users who are still using the iPhone 11 or the older iPhone might see a lot of value in the iPhone 14. It’s still a great smartphone with faster performance, longer battery life, better cameras, 5G support, and increased durability and cameras. The iPhone 14 is a more mainstream smartphone that has been designed to attract a wide user base.
