New Delhi: A senior official of Nokia India said that India will record the fastest 5G deployment in the world and will achieve the greatest success in next-generation telecom service with the support of the government. Speaking at an event organized by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club on Friday night, Nokia India’s Head of Marketing and Corporate Affairs Amit Marwah, without naming China, expressed concern about “sneak equipment” in the telecom sector from neighboring countries.
“We (India) are not late, we are just in time. In the rest of the country compared to other countries the ecosystem has to evolve. We have an ecosystem that is 5G ready. We have 10 percent of smartphones in India that are 5G ready. It will witness India is the fastest rollout of 5G which will be at least three times faster than what we have seen in 4G.”
5G services will gradually cover the entire country over the next two years — Jio promised to do so by December 2023 and Bharti Airtel by March 2024.
Marwah said telecom manufacturing is becoming strong in India supported by the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme.
We were part of PLI 1.0. We were one of the only companies to achieve and exceed our target for PLI 1.0. We left this scheme and released the incentive for one year because PLI 2.0 was more interesting. The volumes and scale in India are growing so much that you left it for one year. We re-applied for PLI f2.0 and today we’re part of PLI 2.0 which means we’re investing more, adding more lines and adding more products,” he said.
The PLI scheme offers incentives of up to 20x on increased sales of Made-in-India communication gears. The government has added additional incentives for product design in India in the second edition of the PLI scheme.
Marwa said manufacturing is in a very positive state in India across sectors but certainly in the telecom sector.
“The only challenge at the moment is the availability of semiconductor materials. 60-80 percent of what we make requires semiconductors. This is an area where we still need to work. There is still some kind of equipment infiltration in telecoms from neighboring countries that need To be more vigilant and to stop at customs.” Telecom Division, Deputy General Manager (Policy) YGSC Kishore Babu said that 5G deployments and applications are expected to be more diversified in India than in other countries.
“However, most use cases around the world remind us that we may have to innovate to meet most requirements in the coming months and years,” said Babu.
5G is the biggest technology opportunity to date, for India to bridge what we commonly refer to as Bharat and India, said Tech Mahindra, Chief Strategy Officer and Head of Growth, Jagdish Mitra.
“We have 62 percent of our workforce in the agriculture sector, and 5G gives us a huge opportunity to turn that into the most profitable sector. We can enable high returns by producing smarter networks and delivering products to farmers,” Mitra said. .
Telecom Sector Skills Council, CEO, Arvind Bali said that nearly 25,000 people need to rehabilitate their telecom skills and skills in the next few years because there is a shift from 4G to 5G.
“We need to have at least one technician and engineer who, in the next few years, are specifically trained in 5G courses for the new job requirements, and we at TSSC are setting up centers of excellence and training laboratories with the help of the 5G network, which will open up great requirements for a talented workforce as we train Young people on new age technologies.
He said that TSSC is also developing all digital curricula and content to train people to meet industry requirements.
